Development on the Mahogany community first began in 2007, making it relatively new as far as Calgary communities go. Rapid development has occurred year over year since about 2011, when only 365 homes were located in the community. By 2012 that number had grown to 572, and the population to 1,266.

Five lakes make up Mahogany, three large and two small. Not many Calgary communities devote this much space to water. Even so, the community boasts a beautiful beach called Mahogany West Beach.
